Don’t Blog Your Business So I Can Dominate

by Rich Lazzara

I hope you’re one of those people that thinks blogging about your business is a waist of time.  If you are, stop reading, I don’t want to ruin it.  However for those smart enough to stick around, here’s 5 reasons your business needs a blog.

Web Agencies Suck!

Yeah I said it. I know there are plenty of really good ones but one of the primary reasons I started a blog 5 years ago was because the company that managed our website was slow to update and too costly.  A blog allows you to take control and update as frequently as you want. Which by the way helps improve your site ranking in Google. They like to see frequently updated content. Which leads to me to one of the best, if not the best, reason for a blog.

Who Am I?

You no longer are who you say you are.  You’re who Google says you are, period.  Google controls 65% of all search and 95% of all mobile search (which is the future).  In fact overall search per user is up 47% from 2007 to 2009.

So that’s a lot of stats and all but so what! The so what is that your blog can help you win those search terms that are important to your business.

Over 60% of the traffic to my main website comes from organic search.  Our blog gets about 40% . A blog can increase your companies chances of winning, not only those “big” search terms, but those “small” (long tail) ones as well.  In fact there’s a trend to have hundreds, even thousands of blogs for just one company!  But that’s a lesson for another time.

What Do Have To Say For Yourself?

Yes people want to know first and foremost that you can solve a problem or desire they have.  They aren’t interested in conversation about  your company.  They just want what they are looking for.   Your business blog is not going to have a ton of “members”, however it will allow you to engage people, answer questions and help them find the thing they are looking for.

Business is Evil!

Sure seems to be the sentiment these days.  Studies show year over year brand trust continues to erode toward business .  If it wasn’t for our government, business might really be the black sheep of the family.  The point is use your blog to show the personality of the company.  That really is branding 101, putting a face onto the company to attract “like minded” people.  Allow your personality to come through on the blog and build up that trust.

I Just Work Here How Am I Suppose to Know

Blogs are great for employee communication. As business get bigger, faster and more dispersed a blog can help keep everyone in sync with the latest.  If you’re running your company right then your employees are like customers. You need to meet their needs to know the latest about whats going on, a blog can do that.

So that’s some reason to say YES to a business blog.

What do you think? What are some other reasons?  Or do you still disagree?
