Fear Of Control is No Excuse For Ignoring Social Media

by Rich Lazzara on November 19, 2009

“Fear makes cowards of us all” Vince Lombardi

Fear is tough to conquer and one of those things in business that tends to hold us back. Whether it’s fear of the unknown, fear of failure or just fear of change it can be a very real feeling that keeps up paralyzed and unwilling to try new things.

What Are You Afraid  Of?

When you speak with some business leaders about social media one of the common “fears” I continually hear is fear of control. Many are afraid that by engaging in these channels they will loose control of their brands image. Many fear that they may be opening themselves up to negative customer interactions. The interesting thing is that businesses still perceive control of the brand as something that really exists. It doesn’t. Yes you can guide the message, yes you can guide the experience, you can even heavily influence mass audiences. However you can’t control it, only guide it.

The Reality Of Your Fear

Truth is your company is missing out on so many potentially great interactions, feedback, conversations, ideas, customers and sales. Companies need to stop thinking of themselves as these sterile “perfect” examples in society. The reality, and it’s not a revelation, is that companies are run by people and people are fallible. Sure there are going to be mistakes made even potentially embarrassing missteps. However if you are going to succeed in business over the next decade you are going to have to put your fear of the unknown aside and dive into the social media ocean. Your customer is looking for a company that they can communicate with, believe it and most of all trust.  Hiding behind a fear and not engaging your customer will not work.  Companies most ready to embrace this new world will be the ones that succeed, those that don’t, wont.

You need to engage your community, start listening and get involved. The beauty is that conquering your fear just might lead to a great encounter beyond your imagination.

Should companies be fearful of Social Media? Tell me what you think, leave a comment below?

Why Now is the Best Time

  • Rich,

This such a well articulated point. They often say there's no such thing as bad publicity. I couldn't agree more. The thing that these brands have to realize is that bad press gives me that chance to turn a pissed off customer into a loyal lifelong promoter of their product. If they go above and beyond then they will be written about in that way. So, lack of control actually becomes a benefit. I guess it's all how you look at things.
  • good point about turning pissed off customers into promoters. most people dont look at it that way. thanks.
  • Rich,
    Thanks for another great post!

I just returned from the first USCG Podcamp and was so impressed by the social media efforts underway there. However, like all large organizations there are challenges in getting acceptance throughout all levels and areas of the organization. Your post nails what I believe to be the most significant issue. I'll be sharing it with some of my Guardian friends.

Next year year the 2nd annual USCG PodCamp is coming to Tampa. You should definitely get involved. Like you, they are are a great group of innovators and continuous learner leaders.

Hope all's well with you, your family and everybody at Lazzara Yachts.

    Keep up the great work!

There are a lot of business that need it to have a better relationship with there customers. The ones that do not embrace it will be lost while the competition reaps the rewards.
