So here is a conversation that I recently heard between two people.
Person A – “I’ve got this great idea for a business”.
Person B – “Oh yeah, what is it?”
Person A – “It’s this…(proceeds to explain entire idea)”
Person B – “Nice try, but that’s been done before. In fact, several companies are doing the same thing. Need to think of something more original. ”
Person A – Walks away dejected
So do you have an idea that’s been done before? Chances are you do. Most business ideas aren’t completely revolutionary just evolutionary. The whole evolution from Friendster > Myspace > Facebook is an example. As is Yahoo > Google. What if Apple would have listed to the critics when it came to its business idea of opening its own retail outlets in 2001 “Sorry, Steve: Here’s Why Apple Stores Won’t Work” If Steve had followed the advice of critics he would have missed this opportunity, “Apple May Be Highest Grossing Fifth Avenue Retailer”
Here’s five ways you deal with critics
1) Be prepared. It’s not a matter of if, but when you will face them. So be prepared for it and dont let it derail your idea or confidence.
2) Be open. I know your thinking “What!? Did I read that right?” Yeah I’m saying be open to your critics. Can you take what they are saying and improve your idea.
3) Be respectful. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, no need to get upset or angry just because someone tells you your idea sucks.
4) Be motivated. Let the naysayers motivate you even more. Let that be something that feeds your passion and fuels you to work harder.
5) Be convincing. No matter what it is your doing you have to be able to sell your idea. Convincing people is at the root of all sales. No better practice then a critic.
