I’m Not Really Passionate, So Now What?

I’m Not Really Passionate, So Now What?

You’ve heard it said  ”In order to succeed in business you have to be passionate.”

Ok, we’ll then how do you find something you’re passionate about ? To which you’ve been told “To find your passion just imagine something you would do even if you weren’t getting paid.”

Good points, even ones I’ve made myself, but it’s sometimes just not that simple. What if  imagining doing something even if you didn’t get paid only makes you think about “ok how am I going to pay my bills?”  Hard to have passion when you’ve got problems like that.

What if you just aren’t passionate about anything?

What is Passion

Let’s start first by looking at what passion is and isn’t. First, it’s not inherent it’s cultivated.  Like an affinity for old movies, or a developing relationship , or learning to hit a golf ball, cultivating your passion is no different.

Notice I said cultivated and not developed.  We are all born with interests towards one thing over another. You don’t have to start from zero and completely develop your passion.  However you do have to look within to find things that interest you more than others, then cultivate those into passion.   Remember though like anything that you cultivate it takes time AND motivation.

Motivating Your Passion

Let me give you and example. I am passionate about food.  I would love to eat 4-5 full gourmet meals everyday each time eating more than I should.  However I’m also passionate about my health and therefore my motivation is to control my eating.  My passion for my health outweighs my passion for food.  So whats this have to do with finding your passion as an entrepreneur? Everything.

If your passion for freedom, if your passion for control, if your passion for trying new things isn’t greater than your current circumstances then you wont pursue an entrepreneurial path.

Most people will say that they are passionate about controlling their destiny and doing there “own thing” however they don’t do anything about it.  That’s because their passion for complacency outweighs their passion for being an entrepreneur.

Cultivate Your Interests To Find Your Passion

So here is what I’m suggesting.  We all have interests, that if cultivated, could turn into passions.  Start looking at things that interest you and then start cultivating those things into potential business ideas.  Not business plans, that’s for much later, I’m talking about business ideas.  Have an interest in sewing?  Research what’s out there, get ideas from others pursuing the same things. Want to start a sandwich shop?  Do the research on your market, find out what people want, develop the idea.  If you’re unable to do those things then I would suggest you’re not passionate enough about them to make a business out of it.

Go find something that you are.

As you continue to develop your interests and cultivate your passions over time you will find something that you can truly say you’re passionate about.  Passionate enough to make a business of it, passionate enough to get started.

I’m passionate about motivating and helping people reach their entrepreneurial goals. I’m passionate about combining technology with ideas to produce new entrepreneurial endeavors.

How about you? What business idea are you passionate about?  Leave a comment below.

    Rich,
Sometimes I get overwhelmed with the amount of information in my RSS. Luckily I have some favorites. Yours is one of them!

So I went to this post and said to myself, 'you know what, I'm really passionate in what I do, so this article isn't for me'.

Boy am I glad I read on!

    Two things.

One, I found this post really useful, especially this passage; “If your passion for freedom, if your passion for control, if your passion for trying new things isn’t greater than your current circumstances then you wont pursue an entrepreneurial path.

Most people will say that they are passionate about controlling their destiny and doing there “own thing” however they don’t do anything about it. That’s because their passion for complacency outweighs their passion for being an entrepreneur.”

    Awesome! Well said.

Two. Thanks for the bump for my wife's site! She was so excited to see this. You are the man!

Great post, I always look forward to seeing new posts from you.

    Rich,

As you know I've spent the last several months working on different projects. I've found that I have a real passion for new ideas in general. I also realized that one of my greatest passions is meeting and connecting with new people. Is there a business idea in it? Of course :) . While some might say, go be a party planner, I know there are tons of other things I can do.

It's really easy to get caught up in the notion that we can't cash in on our passions. But the reality is that there are plenty of ways to turn passion into cash. It's amazing how many simple ideas have made people fortunes. Great article.

srini, great comments, thanks. Alos it was nice talking with you on the phone today. I look forward to seeing some of the things you are working on. As an “insider” to your projects all I can say is that you have a winner on your hands.

I also know some of your story, which included walking away from a full time job to pursue your passion. I got to give you a hand on that. Most people wont do that and Im happy for you that it is working out. Yours is going to make for a great success story sooner than later. Stay passionate, stay focused.

Wow! I don't really have a passion for much. When I was a teenager, all I did was come home, and do homework because I had to go to university, and do something big. Needless to say, I did horrible in school, and never really knew what I wanted to be. Fast forward to the future, I went to a technical school to do Industrial Instrumentation Engineering Technology, and have about $10,000 in student loans, with no jobs due to recession, and no passion in the field of choice. While others are hands on guys, I get bored quickly. I am screwed, and looking at ways to be wealthy. Investing is one way, and another is internet marketing. Either ways, I am still exploring. I like fast cars, but I like the idea of being in them, and not really the full blown passion of knowing about the company's past, or the car's engine. I don't know how to cope with life anymore.

don't give up, i'm sort of like you in the sense that for me, it was school then home. Now with an engineering degree and no job, I began to look for the things I might enjoy doing, based on conversations I have with people and all. There are two things I see myself doing, but seem to quit as I start…but I found this guide online, hopefully it's not offensive to you, and you check it out http://www.make-my-christian-l… …I wish you the best!
