Ding Dong, the doorbell at your house rings. You haven’t showered in weeks, your clothes are all tattered and you look like crap. You drag yourself to the front door and, surprise, you have guests. Everyone lets themselves in only to find that there in no furniture, no pictures on the wall, nothing! Just white walls, an empty house and you. I’d say you just made a horrible first impression, wouldn’t you?
That’s what’s it like when people go to your Twitter page. That is unless you’ve personalized it.
Why Personalize That Twitter Page
Nearly half of all Twitter users engage the site through Twitter.com, as opposed through a third party program such as Tweetdeck or Seesmic. That means millions can come to your page. What will they see first? Let’s hope its not an empty house. Use the opportunity to show people something unique about yourself or company. Give them a short excerpt on who and what your business is all about. Don’t ignore this space, it’s another great branding opportunity for you to use to your advantage.
How To Personalize That Twitter Page
There are plenty of guides around the Internet that tell you how to make your own personalized Twitter background. There are even companies that specialize in doing just that. Having done one myself as well as hired someone to do another, my recommendation would be to do it yourself. It’s just too easy not to and I’m sure several months down the road there will be things you want to add or change.
What should you have on your page? Most important is to have good photography. Similar to my example above of looking like crap, I’m surprised at how many bad Twitter photos I see. Take the time (or spend the money) to have any photos you may use done right. Make sure there is some way to contact you whether it’s your website, email or phone. One other thing that I like is in the space that Twitter provides for me to put my URL I make that go to a custom landing page. It’s a nice way of personalizing the experience, as well as helping you to track those incoming links from Twitter better.
So, it’s time to get moving, paint those walls and add some furniture. Make yourself and your house look good.
