Personal Branding for the Microwave Generation

by Rich Lazzara on October 28, 2009

I was 9 when we got our first microwave. I still remember it to this day.  Finally you could cook popcorn without having to wait a long time. You could heat up hot chocolate without having to boil water.  My generation has been surrounded by technology that’s primary goal is to speed things up. The mobile phone, Internet, FedEx, e-commerce, SMS, MP3, digital photography, Google and on and on have all used speed as a differencing factor. And while all of these technologies have certainly sped things up, one thing that can’t be done faster is your online personal brand.

It takes time to establish credibility.  It takes time to earn authority. It takes time to gather users. It takes time to generate leads. It takes time to make sales.

One of the biggest problems I see is that people aren’t willing to put the time in online that is needed in order to be successful.  They want it in less than a minute just like their microwave popcorn.

I’m not saying people aren’t spending time on the Internet, just look at the current statistics on facebook, use is way up. But being on the Internet and using it are two different things.  If you are going to be successful you need to have a personal online strategy, one that is about using the Internet not just being on it.

You should be learning, sharing, communicating and contributing all with a laser like focus of developing your brand.  If you approach it this way the reality is it wont take long to reach your goals.  I mean what you can do today, in terms of brand development, would have taken you 3 times longer and cost 3x as only ten years ago.

So what do you need to do? The first thing is to start! Start blogging, start joining social networks, start using video, start using podcast, start with one of these things or start with all of them, it doesn’t really matter, but get started today.

Oh and if your not sure where or how to get started keep coming back to this site. You can also sign up for my free newsletter, which talks more in depth about these types of things.

Also, let me know what are things you’re having trouble with as it pertains to your online brand.  Let me help you, leave a comment below or email me.
