Stop Paying Tolls On The Road To Success

Stop Paying Tolls On The Road To Success

On my commute home everyday I have to pass through two toll booths.  Several years ago they introduced a device, Sun Pass, that allows you to drive through the lane without stopping to physically pay the toll.  Now as I drive through the Sun Pass transponder debits my account automatically.  The toll cost me the same, the transponder device was free, I save time and the experience is superb….but guess what…each day I pass huge lines of cars backed up paying the toll the same old way.

Hold that illustration in your head.

I speak to people all the time that have aspirations of being an entrepreneur and yet they continue day in and day out doing the same job, the same task, the same patterns as they have everyday.  Meanwhile as they look around people are flying right by them, taking their careers to new heights and new directions.

There’s a similarity to those people still paying tolls the old way and those of you sitting around waiting to become an entrepreneur.  Here’s three…

Three Reasons Why

  • Unaware – I’m sure there are just those drivers that are not even aware that there is a device that allows them to pass through and pay without having to stop.  Likewise there are many aspiring entrepreneurs that just don’t realize the tools that are available to them.  The information is out there, I’ve even started a company to help in some areas.
  • Unable - The Sun Pass does have one restriction, you must have a bank account.  Similarly I realize that many aspiring entrepreneurs are restricted by the time they have.  Many of you are already putting in 60 hours a week just to pay the bills.  However start small, maybe 10-15 min a day working towards your goals.
  • Unwilling – There are many people who just aren’t willing to change how they pay tolls because of fear, complacency, or defiance.  The same holds true for those wanting to be an entrepreneur.  Don’t let those things stop you, recognize them as slowing you down and move past it.

The opportunities are abound and the only way your going to avail yourself of them is to get out of line and into the fast lane.

    Hey Rich,

I think there's some great points here. One of things I think you pointed out is inability. I think most people are able to, but are just motivated enough. I have a friend who's still in school and any time I ask him what he's been working on, he says cover letters and resumes. The funny thing is he's the same guy who had me come and speak to the marketing society at Pepperdine about why that method is such a waste of time. He has immense amounts of time, but sometimes I wonder if he's as driven as I am to make change and take control. You would think now that I have a day job, my efforts would have slowed. Instead I'm finding that I'm doing more and I'm doing it faster and getting more and more polished at what I do.

So in my mind when people say they are unable, what they are really saying is unwilling. Even if it means attacking it in bite size pieces goals can be accomplished.

Srini, good points. Your story is a very good one and I look forward to the day when you can share how you went from quitting to success. I also agree that the more you do the “easier” it becomes. More natural is probably a better word for me to use. It really is like a snowball rolling down hill…it gains momentum and size with each movement. Thanks for the good comments as always.
