Tell Your Story With A Podcast

Tell Your Story With A Podcast

Remember when you use to gather the family around the radio?  It was the size of a TV and everyone would settle in for a night of audible entertainment.  Don’t remember that? Yeah me either.

In fact I can’t remember the last time I listened to radio.  These days if it’s not on my iPod I’m just not interested. One of the things I love to listen to, other than music, are  Podcasts.  I find so many advantages to being able to hear something over reading it.  In fact I find myself more mentally engaged. How can your business utilize this tool? Should your business utilize Podcasts?

Are Podcasts Dead? Far From It

Podcasts were a hot topic when they debuted years ago.  With the advent of the Apple iPod and iTunes software, nearly anyone could record and launch there own Podcast with little effort.  Then as many things do on the Internet the mainstream media moved onto the next big thing.  However make no mistake about it, the Podcast audience still continues to increase (read Here and Here).  So how can you use Podcasts to help your business?

Tell A Your Story

Start by telling a story and not just A story but YOUR story. The art of storytelling is something you need to master in order to be successful in business.  I’m not talking about fiction either.  If you want that just look at most corporate brochures. I’m talking about telling your story from the perspective of your customers.  Something that is engaging and informational at the same time.  Podcasts allow you to elaborate on so many facets of your business and the fact that it is audible allows your passion to be heard, even felt. That’s something that’s really hard to get across with print or online text only.

The Podcast Advantage

I find incredible content for free on Podcasts.  I happen to use iTunes and can search and find a show on just about any topic. The thing I like about them is I can take them with me.  If I want to learn more on a topic I can put them in my car and listen on the way home.  If I’m on a plane I can pop on that interview and here what they had to say.  So how could you use it?  How about doing a Podcast where you interview some of your customers.  Let them tell your story for you.  There is nothing like hearing a testimonial from other customers.  The passion, context, voice inflections, personality all come out when your able to hear a testimonial as opposed to just reading it.

Couldn’t You Just Use Video?

Videos are nice and I’m a huge fan of using video in your business. But for one thing a Podcast is much easier to create and it’s much more portable.  Plus I’ve found that interviewing customers on video can sometimes be a challenge.  Videos really need to be done in person and you may not have that kind of access to your customers. Plus I find that most people get nervous in front of a camera and the testimonial is less than affective.  Podcasting can avoid both of these issues and allow you to still get that great testimonial story without shooting video.

Consider Podcasting for your business, it can be fun and most of all its a great way to tell your story.

Tell me, do you listen to Podcasts now?  Have you ever?

    Rich,

This is pretty timely considering the conversation we just had and the fact that I'll be publishing the podcast that we did soon. Like we talked about podcasting is a great way to build genuine relationships with people in the blogosphere.

Yes sir, thank you for the interview. I look forward to hearing it.

Rich, you bring up a great point. I have been trying to get marine and powersports dealers to use podcasts for the past year or so, especially with the explosion of the iPod. They can send a personal message to their customers, in their voice. Email is great, but hearing your salesmen's voice or the owner's voice carries much more weight. Reading about an open house if fine, but hearing the excitement in someone's voice can get anyone motivated about visiting their booth at a show or an open house at their dealership.

From an OEM stand point, I have been trying to get OEM's to create easy how to pod casts for their customers on how to fix something on their boat or yacht or how to work certain equipment. Further more step by step instructions or quick tips on how to operate the boat or a docking tip would be beneficial to the owner and provide the OEM with an added advantage over their customer. Furthermore the costs of a pod cast are a fraction of the cost of printed literature.

With the development of my new website, I am hoping to have not only how to videos, but pod casts as well, so my customers can listen to a specific pod cast on anchoring, while they are actually trying to anchor their boat.

    Hi Rich;

Great post! I'd like to remind your readers that back in January 2009 you were our guest on Messing About In Ships podcast where you told the great Lazzara Yachts story. http://su.pr/1Emr1b So not only do your offer good advice here, but you walk the walk!

I've been producing podcasts since 2006 for various organizations and for various purposes. Our most recent project is the Weekly Leader podcast where among other things, each week Pam Fox Rollin (ceo, Ideashape) and I interview CEO's and other organizational leaders about their experiences and the challenges of leadership. (http://weeklyleader.net) Your readers might be particularly interested in episode 5 where I interview Admiral Thad Allen, Commandant of the US Coast Guard.

Next week I'm heading to the first US Coast Guard podcamp which is being held in conjunction the USCG Innovation Expo in Virginia Beach. It's free and open to the public so if anyone is interested in attending there's more information here: http://uscgpodcamp.com and sign up here:http://podcampuscg.eventbrite.com/?ref=ebtn. I'll be presenting a session on podcasting basics and we'll be recording a “live” leadership discussion for next week's Weekly Leader podcast.

Finally, if any of your readers are interested in getting into podcasting but just don't know where to start, we created a unit with Sea-Fever Consulting LLC called seaz media to provide social media services from consulting through to production and distribution. Contact us for more info.

Your blog is always interesting and informative. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Peter , hope you, your son and dad are all doing well. Interesting that there is a USCG podcamp, I wouldn't have even thought about that. Really cool. Yeah for those of you needing more info I would highly recommend Peter as we have not only had the opportunity to chat online but spent time together at our factory in Tampa. He knows how to do podcasts for sure. Thanks for the nice comments.

I agree with you Rich that on PodCast you find a lot of information. And yes it is easier to listen too than watching video. I think videocasts and podcasts can have a serious place within the business communication. In Europe is less big then in the US , but Europe must follow … :)

Yeah, in my travels throughout Europe I dont get the feeling that Europeans are so into Social Networking, Blogs, Online Video. I know there is widespread mobile use, even more so than here, but maybe not so much on the Social Networking Tools like Podcasts. Thanks for the comments.

You know where I stand with this…I believe podcasts are a huge resource and are vastly underrated. I can't wait to launch mine.
