What Business Can Learn from Blogging

by Rich Lazzara on October 19, 2009

So I’ve just returned form 2009 Blogworld and New Media Expo and if I had to sum it up in one word it would be; YES.

Yes, you must have a blog. Yes, you must optimize your websites design. Yes, you must use email marketing. Yes, you must use social media. Yes, you must use search engine optimization. Yes, you must use video. Yes, you must use audio. Yes, you must be involved in online marketing your business. Yes, you must be involved in the online conversation. And, YES you must have a strategic plan to implement all of this today.

There is is no future for any business that is not utilizing these tools in strategic ways.  This is not a secret and I will continue to shout it out to all.  YOU MUST HAVE A STRATEGIC PLAN FOR ONLINE MARKETING YOUR BUSINESS!

It was interesting to see people’s reactions when I told them I was with a yacht company.  They wondered what I would be doing at a blogging and new media convention.  The reason for me is simple; it’s the future of sales and marketing.  As a business owner you have to be up to speed on these tools.  Whatever ways you have historically used to get your message out, will be second to online marketing. Companies that leverage these available tools will be successful, those that don’t, won’t.

These tools are even more important to small and medium size businesses as it allows you very inexpensively to compete, even dominate your niche. In the last 24 months, Internet leads have become the second largest source of leads for our company. I have no doubt that given another 24 months it will move to first.

So, from a business owners perspective I’ve told you yes you need to be involved, but you should certainly ask, “why?”.  Ill spend the rest of this week and more answering that question.

Also, I took a ton of notes at Blogworld and if you have any questions about how the event was, or anything else, leave a comment and Ill post the answers for all to see.

You can always email me too.

Michael Moore has a new movie coming out. You probably aren't going to like it. but it does touch on some bases, such as making money by doing hard work and building things, etc. You guys build yachts hands on for a living. But blogging doesn't seem to build anything. When it comes to blogging, I usually don't want to hear what somebody else is doing because it might want to be something I am doing.
  • Hey SHB is on the board, welcome. See that's the problem. Digital content IS building something. Its just made of bits not atoms. So for instance, you buy books? yes, thats digital content. You buy video games? yes thats digital content. You buy movies, music, etc. all digital content. You by those iPhone apps? I know you do , so yes. You went to college? You paid money with nothing tangible to show for it, I mean nothing physical? Yes and it was worth it , well in my case maybe not ;) You get my point.

I know you use to have an ISP before there was even ISP (way ahead of the curve) You were selling bandwidth, not very "hands on". Would others have paid you to know what you knew? Yes

The future "factory worker" is one who makes digital content, and yes blogs are included. Those that are "hands on" will be from under developed nations and robots.

For those that dont know SHB is a good friend of mine and I appreciate the conversation.

    Hey Rich,

Just in the past few weeks I have completely changed my whole outlook on how to market my business online and have really started to focus on the social media and blogging side of things. I think that at first I was a bit intimidated and overwhelmed with the whole thought of this new approach however I realized that the more I opened my eyes and really just bite the bullet it really seems to make more and more sense. I will say that you have inspired me to continue down this road and I am learning more and more everyday.

I will continue to follow your blog

    Thanks
    Josh W
  • Josh,

Great to hear man! Keep it up. Don't let this stuff intimidate you, just take one thing at a time and learn as much as you can. It's not going away AND it can increase your business. Those most up to speed and utilizing these tools will be the ones who succeed in the future. Leave a post or email me anytime if you have questions.

Thanks, I appreciate the support...I'm spending a lot of time reading up on some of the sites you follow and recommend on twitter. Its weird I am kinda getting into it.
  • Not weird, smart. You have to figure this stuff out. It takes time, its hard work and it will pay off. On your site now you need to figure out how to get all of those banner adds to the side column and your main content hire in the middle. When someone goes to your site now, its all ads unless they scroll down. Move all the ads to the right hand column only and get the content above the fold.

I have been working on that over the past few days...Uploaded a blog style platform and trying to set it up and reorganize the whole thing now that I have a different mindset. I was playing around with different layouts to accommodate a nice blog area now that I have decided to not run away from the blogging aspect. Any advice, ideas or criticism would be greatly appreciated.
  • Sounds great. Yeah I would be happy to give you advice. What "blog style platform" are you using. I would HIGHLY recommend Wordpress. Lets discuss via email, I need to know more about what it is your trying to accomplish. I will email you in the am. Talk later.

Cool. Thanks..I am using Wordpress. We will talk soon
  • Love the way you said that. It definitely was a YES conference. Are you heading to any others this year?
  • None for the rest of the year. Do you recommend any?
  • I'm just making my way onto the circuit, but I'm going to try and make Affiliate Convention in LA...Lara mentioned one in NY but I can't remember the name.
  • Sounds good. Im not going to make that so youll have to send me the notes. Let me know if you remember that NY one though. Thx.
